I found this great quote in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth Bennett is invited to take a summer tour with her aunt and uncle. Her response is this: "My dear, dear aunt, "she rapturously cried, "what delight! What felicity! You give me fresh life and vigor. Adieu to disappointment and spleen. What are men to rocks and mountains?" (Pride and Prejudice, ch. 27). This cracked me up. I've read this novel several times before and had never noticed the "adieu to disappoint and spleen." I mean, I don't decided to bid adieu to my spleen just because I'm taking a tour of the countryside! I can't help but think that our protagonist might be going just a bit overboard and maybe a little sarcastic there. I love that novel...it's got to be my favorite novel of all time. Jane Austen seemed to have a very keen insight into marriage even though she never married herself. She also had a wicked sense of humor. If you have never read any of her works, I highly recommend them. Yes, they are a bit wordier than anything written today, but they are worth the nuggets that come with them. I guess that would be my joy for the day today. I worked at 4 am again today so I'm not the most awake right now.
