Today we discussed the theme of sin and repentance in Sunday School. (Everyone's favorite subjects.) We read Psalm 51, the psalm David wrote after he sinned with Bathesheba. I suspect that when David had Uriah killed so that he could cover up his adultery, he knew what he was doing was wrong. I suspect that he felt incredibly guilty over it and that was why he treated the person that he had wronged so badly. Sometimes when we've sinned against a person, afterwards we will treat that person terribly because of the guilt. In this case David had the person he had wronged killed. I also suspect that while this was going on, David was distant from God. A man after God's own heart, he had fallen away. So when Nathan came and pointed the finger at him, David finally had to admit the gig was up. He didn't make excuses, didn't deny it, and didn't try to hide. He just came clean. I suspect in some ways it was relief. When we are in a state of rebellion against God, we don't feel good, but repenting (in an ironic way) leads to joy. I thank God that He always forgives and is faithful, though we are not.
