I know I've already posted just a few minutes ago, but I just got word of Red Sox legend Johnny Pesky's passing at the age of 92, and I am truly saddened by it. The man was class all the way around, and to be with an organization for 61 years truly says something remarkable about the man. The Yankees even had a moment of silence for him before their game against the Rangers tonight, that's how much Pesky was loved and respected around baseball. I know he was 92, but his passing is a sad day for baseball, and makes a rough year for the Red Sox even rougher. When I saw that he had passed my stomach dropped. Unfortunately I've gotten used to that feeling this year, with so many friends and family members passing away. It helps when I remember that God is with me and knows what I'm feeling (His Son was killed! Yes, He was resurrected 3 days later, but the point still stands.)
Anyway, in 2004 when I went to the Red Sox spring training facility with my family, Johnny was signing autographs, as he did frequently. I handed him a calendar to sign. He signed it graciously and then said, "There you go, kiddo!" (Never mind that I was 25 at the time! To him, I was a kid.) I'll never forget how nice he was that day, and I'm glad that he lived long enough to see the Sox win it all in 2004. Rest in peace, Johnny. You will be missed.
