Today I'm feeling a bit frivolous so I will write about a joy common in women: the joy of a good handbag. I was flipping through the current mega issue of In Style, (love those September issues) and Coach had several pages of advertising in it. They had a small, bright blue handbag (more of a clutch, really), but oh! the color! And the stitching! See, the thing is when I got my first Coach bag back in 2004 I thought the stitching looked like the stitching on a baseball glove. I just found out that the inspiration for the original line of Coach men's wallets back in 1941 was the leather used to make baseball gloves. The bags may still be made of the same leather, in fact, I'm almost positive they are. Certain male relatives couldn't understand why I would pay so much for a purse. Well, look at the price of baseball gloves---they are not all that cheap.
The only downside of course, is that once you have an expensive handbag, it's hard to go back to cheap bags. Especially because you know they're not made nearly as well. So while I may not get the bright blue Coach bag, it's a safe bet that my next purse will be bright blue. All my purses are muted colors, or neutrals, or black. I want a bright pop of color to go with my outfit. I think that's why bright blue is everywhere this season. If I may, I will give a little insight to the males of the human species as to why handbags are so confounded important:
1. We carry our life in it. Be it little or small, we want to be able to carry some kleenex, our walled, keys, cell phone, make up, an emergency book, food, etc. We don't want to carry a stupid plastic shopping bag or put our things into our pocket. (I find keeping my keys in my pocket extremely uncomfortable).
2. Some of us have to wear uniforms to work and our purse is our only form of self expression. I know I'm still an individual when my bag is not the same as everyone else's.
3. Sometimes the bag makes the outfit. The outfit doesn't look put together until you have the matching bag.
4. Because a handbag is like a work of art or an expensive car. When I carry one of my Coach bags, I feel like I'm driving a Mercedes Benz. However, I'm not particularly fond of Louis Vuitton bags--they're like the Porsches or the Lamborghini's of the world---too flashy and tacky, not substantial.
Anyway, I've gone on long enough on handbags. Hope you'll excuse my frivolity.
