Today we discussed King David's sin with Bathsheba and the consequences not only for him personally, but for his family and the nation of Israel as a whole. Though he was forgiven, his son with Bathsheba died as a direct consequence. I never noticed until today though, that Nathan the prophet pointed out to David that the nation was blaspheming God because of him. He placed an obstacle in the path of those who would believe.
In Romans 14, Paul writes about the principles of Christian liberty. For example in verse 13: "Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not put an obstacle in another Christian's path."  He then goes on to list ways to do that.

  • Live a life of joy and goodness and peace in the Holy Spirit (verse 17) and serve Christ with this attitude (v. 18)
  • Don't do anything that might cause another Christian to stumble. (v. 21)
  • In chapter 15, "Accept each other just as Christ has accepted you; then God will be glorified (15:7)"
  • In chapter 16, "Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people's faith by teaching things that are contrary to what you have been taught. (16:17)
The church today surely has a problem with people teaching things that are contrary to what Scripture says, and that is the biggest obstacle placed in a Christian's path. We need to check everything that someone says against God's word. If it doesn't square, then it isn't true.
