Another day, another loss for the Red Sox. Good grief, watching them right now is like watching a train wreck. You don't want to stare, but you can't look away. So I'll start focusing more on positive things. As I continue on in my study of my Biblical music, I turn to Ephesians 5:19: "Then you will sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, making music to the Lord in your hearts." This comes after a warning not to be drunk with alcohol, but to let the Holy Spirit control you. When the Holy Spirit controls us, music comes from the heart and is directed towards the Lord. The most beautiful music of all is the song of the redeemed. There are a lot of hymns and current worship songs that address this. So our aim, then, is to be controlled by the Holy Spirit, and even those of us who aren't musically inclined will sound great to the Lord. You don't have to be on key, you just have to mean it. Mark Lowry once talked about a choir singing "Joy Unspeakable" but they looked bored to tears. He had a deadpan expression and said Yawn. That always drove me nuts when I sang in the chamber singers and the choirs I was in--people who didn't put any heart into their playing. Of course, I don't think the chorus meant as much to them as it did to me, and maybe that's why people enjoyed watching me sing. It was pure joy for me---the best job I ever had, and I didn't get paid for it.
