I'm exhausted today. It's my fault because I stayed up until 1:30 this morning watching Downton Abbey. The show just sucked me into it's world of early twentieth century England, with an intimate look at the lives of the servants. Did you know that the class system in England extended down into the servants? For example, the head butler was the highest ranking servant, and to be a house maid was better than being a kitchen maid, etc. It absolutely fascinates me that show. It also takes on the issue of entailment, because the family who live in Downton Abbey have no sons, and women at the time could not inherit, so the estate would be left to the nearest male relative. And of course the drama is written so well that you have to keep watching. Will Mr. Bates and Anna ever be able to be together??? Will Lady Mary and Matthew just admit already that they're meant to be together? All these questions and story lines keep me watching. Plus I feel like I'm learning something, that I'm watching intelligent television. All the same, I probably shouldn't stay up until 1:30 am watching it! They won't air the next season in the US until January, so this won't be a problem for a while.
That's one of my joys--is getting so caught up in a program or a book or whatever, that you forget your own problems. I think distraction can be a good thing sometimes. It just depends on what you're being distracted from. If you are being distracted while driving, not good. If you are distracted from listening to a loved one...not good. If you're distracted from listening to God, really not good. However, if you're distracted from the negative thoughts that like to dwell in your head, that's good. If you're distracted from focusing on yourself, that's good.
