Andy and I went to the Cumberland Fair today. Oh, how I love this time of year, with the sights and sounds of the fair. The smell of unhealthy food mixed with barnyard animals, and the sounds of rides and various vendors. It's always fun to go look. We told ourselves that we would not bring home another bunny this year, and we stuck to it! They were awfully cute though. There are always at least five or ten bunnies that we fall in love with. They have many that are only 8 weeks old and tiny, and some that are huge. The rabbits come in all shapes and sizes, all too adorable. But we knew Molly would not appreciate another 'sibling'. Considering that last year at this time she went from being the only pet to being one of three pets, we didn't feel right introducing another animal into the house.
There was a little boy there, around two years old, who was just into everything there. All the animals, everything. He got so excited, his mother was having a hard time keeping up with him. And he made me think of my baby nephew Abel. That will be him before too long. I would love to take him to the fair someday, to see that sense of awe that little kids get around animals. Another little kid pointed out that the chickens have yellow feet. I would love to see Abel experience that. It reminds me that we need to have that same sense of awe when it comes to God. When we discover something else that God chooses to reveal to us, do we have that "Wow! Look at that!" attitude that the very young have, or do we have a "That's nice, God." yawnnnnn attitude?
In Matthew 18, the disciples, wanting power and glory for themselves, ask Jesus who was going to be the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. "Jesus called a small child over to Him and put the child among them. Then He said, 'I assure you, unless you turn from your sins and become as little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven." (Matthew 18: 1-4) I hope to get back some of that child like innocence that I had once, discovering and getting excited over little things like yellow chicken feet. May God grant my request.
