Well, to no one's shock, Bobby Valentine was let go today as manager of the Red Sox. I could almost hear the cheers from Boston. I agree that he needed to go, but I feel bad for him in a way. It couldn't have been an easy year in Boston for him at all. The injuries certainly didn't help--losing Ortiz for the second half of the year showed us how important he is to their lineup. Hopefully they'll resign him..although it brings to mind what are they going to do when Ortiz retires? Unfortunately, the Bobby V firing has overshadowed the first Triple Crown winner in 45 years, Miguel Cabrera. He certainly deserves a shout out, although I guess he's not too fond of the attention, kind of like the previous winner, Yaz.
The thing that bothered me about Bobby was the way he went about calling out players in public. It seems if you need to correct somebody on something, going to the media is not the best way to do it. Most likely, instead of changing their ways, they'll be angry and resentful. I think a failure to connect with players let to a miserable season for everybody. Proverbs 11: 14 says, "Without wise leadership, a nation falls; with many counselors, there is safety." Also, Proverbs 13:3 says: "Those who control their tongue will have a long life; a quick retort can ruin everything." Granted, this is baseball, and not life, but I think Bobby Valentine's tongue contributed to his short tenure at the helm of the Red Sox. However, everybody agrees on one thing: it was certainly not a boring season with Bobby V.
