"Where is your Father?" they asked. Jesus answered, "Since you don't know who I am, you don't know who my Father is. If you knew me, then you would know my Father, too." Jesus made these statements while He was teaching in the section of the Temple known as the Treasury. (John 8:19)Ouch. If the people realized what Jesus had just told them...that they didn't know God. After all they claimed to be God's chosen people...how could they be chosen of God if they didn't know God? Since they didn't know Jesus, they didn't know who His Father is. His Father is God, hence they didn't know God, either. That implies much about their character. These were the same people who were trying to kill Him.
The Pharisees tried to kill Him because He didn't fit their preconceived ideas about the Messiah...they also didn't like the way He taught. He taught as one who had authority..they must have thought Him quite the upstart because He didn't follow all their rules.
I pray that God would search out and find anything in me that is similar to these Pharisees. I do not want to be so self-righteous and so sure that I'm right that people will think that I don't know God. I want everyone to know that I know God and I know His Son as my Lord and Savior.
