Let the Little Children Come to Me...

Today was Easter Sunday, the holiest, most joyful day of the year for believers. The number of small children in church today was awesome!! My little nephew Abel was having a blast walking all over the church, with his dad and his grammy. Big smiles--both from him and from all who saw him. But as I was seeing him today, I was reminded of what Jesus told his disciples when they were arguing over who was going to be the greatest in the Kingdom:

Jesus called a small child over to him and put the child among them. Then he said, "I assure you, unless you turn from your sins and become as little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming Me. But if anyone causes one if these little ones who trusts in me to lost faith, it would be better for that person to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around the neck. (Matthew 18:2-6)
First, this puts the lie to the old maxim, "Children should be seen and not heard." Granted, children should obey their parents, but I think when Jesus asks us to welcome children, it's pretty clear that this is without conditions. Children are going to make noise, and be restless, and get into things. They are figuring out the world around them.
I think Jesus tells us that to get into the Kingdom of Heaven we have to be like small children is because children generally aren't cynical. They haven't had the negative experiences that adults have had. Becoming an adult brings a lot of burdens on a person, and yes, while we need to make sure we're doing what we can to provide for ourselves, we need to keep the same trust in Jesus that children have. They don't worry about where their next meal comes from, or how they are going to pay their mortgage. If we are living within our means and working to earn our way, we shouldn't have anxiety over the future. God will provide.
I think this may be the most cynical age ever. Moral relativism has done a lot of damage in this day and age. If everybody has their own "truth", that leaves people without a solid base to build their lives on. One person's truth may go up against another person's truth. Both cannot be right. But so many people have bought into moral relativism, even though it is a very shallow philosophy. I think the hollowness that comes with buying into this brings on the cynicism.
To come to Jesus, we need to rid ourselves of our cynicism and become like a child again.
