I've been thinking about the phrase "Spend time with God." On the surface this sounds like an excellent idea and wise advice. I mean, why wouldn't we want to spend time with God. When I got to thinking about this more though, the phrase really isn't adequate to describe how our relationship with God should be. After all, if we set aside time for God, doesn't this imply that the rest of the time we're using selfishly? Shouldn't we spend all 24 hours per day, seven days a week, etc. with God? We can do nothing apart from Him, so it seems a bit silly to set apart time to spend with God. However, if we say we should "Spend time reading His word," or "Spend time in prayer" that is fine. But "Spend time with God" implies that we're doing Him a big favor by gracing Him with our presence and I don't like that expression. I'm no theologian; I haven't ever taken any ministry classes, but with all the reading and studying and praying I've been doing, I've been digging deeper into the meaning of His Word, and trying to determine what He wants and how to please Him. I haven't perfected this, and I don't expect to until He returns, but my desire is to become more like Him. I think I'll start by remembering that I'm spending time with Him all the time.
