I am currently watching a movie called Last Ounce of Courage, about a man who is trying to bring Christmas back to his town. This is a Christian movie. But I'm beginning to wonder how Christian this really is. I think it is making Christians look combative. Granted, we are supposed to make a stand for what's right, and to be true to God's Word. However, these type of movies kind of bother me because Christians are not portrayed as doing what Christ commissioned them to do:
"Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:19-20)
And where did Jesus get the authority to issue this command? "Jesus came and told His disciples, 'I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth." (Matthew 28:18)
My concern is that non believers may see these movies and think that all Christians do is complain about how their rights are being violated. The Newsboys did a song, "Landslide of Love", and there's a line that goes, "Every time we shout our rights out, we get all grouchy and gray". I think this is what has happened to America...all we do is talk about fighting for our rights and we ignore other people. Now I certainly think that we should be able to celebrate Christmas, etc, and be able to exercise our Constitutional rights. I'm just wondering if Christians are spending too much time fighting and not enough time following Christ. Not enough time loving people enough to share Christ's love. And this may be a sad statement, but I tend to think there are better messages in secular movies than there are in "Christian" ones....Casablanca is a perfect example.
The truth is that following Christ and making disciples can be a messy business. We actually have to get in there and care about people we're trying to win over--can we really get people to even listen to us if we're acting quarrelsome?? I'm afraid that this movie is really condescending and not a very attractive witness for Christ.
