This past week, Phil Robertson of "Duck Dynasty" fame was suspended from his show for comments he made to GQ magazine. The thing of this is that the creators of Duck Dynasty knew that the family was a conservative Christian family with a Biblical worldview. They should not have been surprised when he spoke out against homosexuality. Thing is, he also spoke out against promiscuity in general, and he also spoke out against hatred towards those who practice these things when he said that he didn't mean any disrespect because they are God's creatures too. I don't think people read the whole quote, or it was taken out of context.
I don't agree with the decision to suspend him. First, this is supposed to be a country founded on freedom of speech--even with those with whom we may disagree. (I happen to agree with him, but that's irrelevant. I would stand up for the rights of atheists to have free speech, as long as they weren't urging violence against Christians or those of other faiths.) The fact is many of these people arguing for gay rights and such are not lovers of the 1st Amendment--it would force them to have to listen to those who want to speak Biblical truths. And the ACLU has been trying to silence Evangelical Christians for years...their name is a misnomer...it should be "American Civil Liberals Union" ...standing up the rights of everybody except Conservative Christians. A couple of months ago, the Biddeford School department took criticism for allowing an anti-bullying program that mentioned that a victim of the Columbine school shootings accepted Jesus as her Savior. Nobody was being forced to become a Christian--it was only mentioned that somebody was a Christian and the ACLU freaked out. This same thing is happening with Phil Robertson and his family today. They want to silence those who speak truth. We cannot let that happen. We have to continue to bring light into a dark world. And that light is Jesus Christ. This is a world where people no longer have any idea what healthy relationships are, whether they are romantic or familial relationships. And hostile forces want to keep people in the dark---away from Christ and from God.
This whole incident should be no surprise to those who are looking for Christ's return. Jesus said in Matthew 24: "You will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because of your allegiance to me. And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will lead many people astray. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. But those who endure to the end will be saved. And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then, finally, the end will come. (Matthew 24: 9-14). This is exactly what is happening, and that is all Phil Robertson is trying to do: he's trying to warn people, and he is being silenced. I hope that the producers will reinstate him, and I pray for their family that their faith will remain strong no matter what happens.
